Welcome to Newton County
Just 35 miles from Atlanta, Newton County real estate boasts five charming municipalities, each with a distinct personality. Newton features stunning antebellum architecture, tree-lined streets and a courthouse that is said to be the most beautiful in Georgia.
The region’s natural beauty includes three rivers: the Alcovy, Yellow and South Rivers, which meet at Lake Jackson. Lake Varner offers some of the best fishing in the state, and Factory Shoals Park is home not only to spectacular shoals, but also to a charming campsite and the historic ruins of an original mill town.
Newton County Government
Residents are very active in the town’s commerce and government. The Center for Community Preservation and Planning was founded in 2002 by residents who were concerned about Atlanta’s suburban sprawl which was set to reach Newton County. By accommodating and managing future growth, Newton County lay leaders defend the environment, reduce long-term public expenses and preserve the community for the future.
A community initiative called Go Outside and Play! offers many resources to the Newton County public, encouraging them to use the county’s many outdoor natural resources. Newton Trails, for example, is a non-profit organization to promote and develop a county-wide network of multi-use trails for walkers, runners and bicyclists. Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center offers fishing, hunting, hiking, archery, a shooting range, horseback riding, camping, bird watching, and children’s education programs.
For history or architecture enthusiasts, Gaither Plantation offers one of the few remaining examples of mid-19th to late 20th century farms and cotton plantations in Northeast Georgia. The plantation’s buildings and grounds can be rented for weddings and other special events.
Newton County Education
Newton County offers public schools, theme schools, and charter schools. Newton County School System strives to guarantee each student is college or career ready upon graduation. This year, Newton County schools were honored at the state capital with a Golden Radish Award, a prestigious distinction which acknowledges the leadership of school representatives building farm-to-school programs.
The elementary theme school focuses on parent involvement and requires parents to participate heavily in the education program. Parents are required to contribute 20 hours of volunteer service per school year, and attend regular PTO meetings and parent teacher conferences.
